Services · X12 EDI integration
X12 EDI integration connects your store or ERP to the retailers, suppliers and 3PLs that require standard ANSI X12 documents, from purchase orders to invoices. NativeCode is an Atlanta-based team that sets up, tests and monitors EDI for ecommerce brands and retailers nationwide.

What’s included
X12 EDI is the ANSI standard format that North American retailers, suppliers and logistics providers use to exchange business documents. Each document type is a numbered transaction set, such as the 850 purchase order. These are the sets ecommerce brands and retailers exchange most.
01
The 850 purchase order says what a partner wants to buy. The 855 PO acknowledgment confirms what you accept, change or reject.
02
The 856 ASN lists the cartons, items and tracking in each shipment, matched to the GS1-128 carton labels many retailers require.
03
The 810 bills each order in the partner's format, checked against the 850 and 856 so quantities and totals reconcile.
04
The 846 shares stock levels with a partner on a schedule, so retailers and marketplaces only sell what can ship.
05
The 940 warehouse shipping order tells a 3PL what to ship. The 945 warehouse shipping advice confirms what actually shipped.
06
The 997 confirms each document arrived and passed syntax checks. A rejected 997 is the first sign that something failed.
How we run it
X12 EDI onboarding works in four steps: collect the partner's requirements, connect and map, test with the partner, then go live with monitoring. Most retail partners will not accept live documents until test documents pass their checks.
If a partner does not require X12, a supplier API or CSV feed is often the better fit. See dropship automation or the wider EDI and ecommerce operations service.
01
Collect each partner's implementation guide: transaction sets, X12 version, IDs, label rules and communication method.
02
Set up AS2, SFTP or a VAN mailbox, then map each X12 segment to Shopify or ERP fields such as SKU, UPC and ship-to.
03
Exchange test 850, 855, 856 and 810 documents until each one passes the partner's compliance checks.
04
Switch to production with alerts for rejected 997s, failed maps and late ASNs, each with a named owner.

Questions
Most ecommerce brands that sell to retailers need the 850 purchase order, 855 PO acknowledgment, 856 advance ship notice, 810 invoice and 997 functional acknowledgment. Dropship and inventory programs add the 846, and brands that ship through a 3PL add the 940 and 945. The exact list comes from each trading partner's implementation guide, so we confirm it before mapping starts.
AS2 sends EDI files directly between two partners over the internet, encrypted and with signed receipts. SFTP moves files through a secure server that one side hosts and the other polls. A VAN, or value-added network, is a third-party mailbox service that routes documents between many partners. The trading partner usually decides which method you use, and we set up whichever one they require.
Each X12 segment is mapped to a field in Shopify or your ERP. The PO number, ship-to address, SKU or UPC, quantity and price on an 850 become an order, and fulfillment data becomes the 856 and 810. We use an EDI translator or middleware for the conversion and document every mapping rule, so product or partner changes do not quietly break the flow.
A failed document is flagged as soon as a 997 comes back rejected, a map throws an error or an expected document does not arrive. The alert goes to a named owner with the partner, PO number and reason, so the issue is fixed and resent before it turns into a late shipment, a chargeback or a missed payment.
An API or CSV feed is often the better fit when the partner does not require EDI, which is common with dropship and wholesale suppliers. These feeds are faster to set up and easier to change. X12 EDI is the right choice when a retailer, marketplace or 3PL requires it, or when a standard format across many partners is worth the setup.
