What's included

What does a BigCommerce to Shopify migration include?

A BigCommerce to Shopify migration includes products, options, custom fields, customers, orders, reviews, content, redirects and integrations, restructured for Shopify.

01

Options and variants

BigCommerce variant options become Shopify variants. Shopify allows three options per product, so larger option sets are split or handled with metafields or an options app.

02

Modifiers and custom fields

Modifiers such as text fields, checkboxes and file uploads move to line item properties or a product options app. Custom fields become metafields.

03

301 redirect map

Every BigCommerce product, category, brand, page and blog URL mapped to its Shopify URL, including your existing 301 rules.

04

Theme and apps

Your Stencil theme rebuilt in Shopify, and each BigCommerce app or built-in feature matched to a Shopify feature or app.

Shopify development →

05

EDI and integrations

ERP, inventory and supplier EDI connections moved to Shopify and tested before go-live so orders keep moving.

EDI and ecommerce operations →

06

Customers, orders and reviews

Customers, addresses, order history and product reviews imported. Passwords cannot move, so customers are invited to reactivate their accounts.

How we run it

How do you migrate BigCommerce to Shopify?

We migrate BigCommerce to Shopify in five steps, with data tested on a staging store before any DNS change.

  1. Step 1

    Audit

Export products, customers and orders, crawl every URL and list apps, options, modifiers and custom fields.

  2. Step 2

    Map

Decide how each option set and modifier fits Shopify variants, and map old URLs to new ones.

  3. Step 3

    Build

Build the Shopify theme, set up apps and metafields, and import data to a staging store.

  4. Step 4

    Launch

Import the redirects, switch DNS, send account invitations and run launch checks.

  5. Step 5

    Monitor

Watch Search Console, orders and ERP or EDI feeds, and fix gaps as they appear.

URLs and redirects

How do BigCommerce URLs map to Shopify?

BigCommerce URLs map to Shopify's fixed /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ paths, so most URLs change and each needs a 301 redirect. BigCommerce can serve products and categories from the root of the domain; Shopify cannot.

Product pages

/blue-jacket/ becomes /products/blue-jacket. Older stores that still use .html product URLs are mapped the same way.

Category and brand pages

/jackets/ becomes /collections/jackets. Brand pages become collections built from the Shopify vendor field.

Web pages and blog posts

/shipping-returns/ becomes /pages/shipping-returns, and /blog/post-name/ becomes /blogs/news/post-name.

Filter and search URLs

Filtered category and search URLs redirect to the parent collection, not one by one. Shopify Search & Discovery handles the new filters.

FAQ

Questions about BigCommerce to Shopify migration

Will we lose SEO rankings moving from BigCommerce to Shopify?

Not if the migration is planned for search. Because Shopify adds /products/ and /collections/ to URLs, nearly every BigCommerce product and category URL changes. We map each one with a 301 redirect, carry over titles, meta descriptions and content, and monitor Search Console after launch to fix any gaps quickly.

How do BigCommerce options and modifiers move to Shopify?

Variant options move to Shopify variants, and modifiers move to line item properties or a product options app. Shopify allows three options per product, so products with more option types are restructured, split into separate products or handled with an options app. We agree the approach for each product type before importing anything.

What happens to BigCommerce custom fields?

Custom fields become Shopify metafields. We create a metafield definition for each field you use, import the values and show them on product pages through the theme. Fields that shoppers filter by can also power collection filters in Shopify Search & Discovery, so specs stay useful after the move.

Can you migrate BigCommerce B2B Edition to Shopify?

Yes, usually to Shopify Plus B2B. Company accounts, buyers, customer group pricing and payment terms map to Shopify companies, catalogs and payment terms. Features such as shopping lists, quote workflows or a custom buyer portal may need an app or custom work, so we list each B2B Edition feature you use and plan its replacement first.

Can customers keep their accounts and order history?

Customer records, addresses and order history can move from BigCommerce to Shopify, but passwords cannot be migrated for security reasons. After launch, customers receive an account invitation so they can set a new password. We import historical orders for reference and reporting and check totals on a staging store first.
